One-on-One Sessions

I offer individual sessions for those who want to work with me one-on-one. These sessions might be a good fit for you if:

  • You’re feeling stuck, confused, or conflicted
  • You want to unlock more of your strengths
  • It feels like life is passing you by
  • The habits you’ve always relied on aren’t working anymore
  • Your life seems good but you wonder, “Is this all there is?”
  • You’re struggling to adjust to a change in your life
  • It’s been hard to express (or even know) who you truly are

In our work together you can expect:

  • Collaboration: We’ll work together to help you better understand yourself and find a way forward.
  • Honesty: I’ll tell you the truth about what I see and hear in our sessions together.
  • Privacy: I will closely safeguard the confidentiality of the things you share with me.

Benefits of This Work

Our collaboration can help you examine longstanding patterns of thought and action that are getting in the way of your goals and happiness, even if they might have served you well earlier in life.

We can also address the wounds of the past that have persisted into the present, and that might affect your current relationships and contribute to feeling stuck emotionally, professionally, or spiritually.

Ultimately the work we do together can help you discover a deeper experience of joy that is possible even when life is hard. In the process you can find more meaning and the freedom to express the full force of who you are.

Some of the areas we can address include:

  • Overcoming self-sabotage
  • Finding joy and meaning
  • Coping with stress
  • Reducing burnout
  • Improving sleep
  • Dealing with midlife challenges
  • Strengthening relationships
  • Navigating a career change
  • Addressing self-alienation
  • Managing anxiety
  • Creating helpful thinking patterns
  • Handling unexpected difficulties
  • Relieving chronic seriousness
  • Processing childhood pain
  • Healing from trauma

*Please note that I currently have a waiting list. Wait time is most likely 4 weeks or longer.

The fee for 45-minute sessions is $375. A few reduced fee slots are available for those with financial need. We can meet by video call, or if you are local and want to meet in person I offer outdoor walking sessions.

When you’re ready to move forward, please contact me at info@sethgillihan.com or click the blue button. We can schedule a brief confidential phone conversation to see if we’re a good fit to work together.

Frequently Asked Questions

K

What ages do you work with?

I work with individuals who are 18 and older.

K

Do you offer coaching?

Our sessions might look more like coaching or more like therapy, depending on what you're dealing with and what you want to focus on. As a licensed psychologist I am able to address concerns that range from mental health struggles to self-actualization.

What are the fees for one-on-one sessions?

The fee for 45-minute sessions is $375. A limited number of reduced-fee slots are available based on financial need. Payment is due at the time of service.

In what ways can the sessions be helpful?

Thousands of research studies have shown that talking with a skilled professional can be really helpful for all kinds of issues. It tends to reduce symptoms, offer ways to cope with hard things, increase self-awareness, and facilitate acceptance of what is.

However, one-on-one sessions are not a cure-all. Sometimes they're not helpful, and even when they are, a person will still experience the ups and downs of life. In general the more invested one is in the process, the more helpful they'll find the sessions to be.

K
L
Do you accept insurance?

I have no connections to insurance companies or Medicare/Medicaid, so I am considered an out-of-network provider for all insurance policies. I can provide you with invoices that include the information insurance companies generally require for reimbursement if you have out-of-network coverage.

K
L
What days and times do you schedule individual sessions?

Availability varies but in general appointments are scheduled between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM Monday-Friday.

K
L
How quickly will I start to feel better?

Many people start to feel better and more hopeful even after the first session. It can be very uplifting to know that you'll be working closely with someone on things that are important to you. It's also not uncommon to feel a bit worse before feeling better, because talking about emotionally difficult things can be painful, similar to cleaning a wound.

K
L
How long will we meet?

The length of our work together varies a lot depending on several factors. Sometimes it can be quite brief, such as one month, for very focused issues. More often it will last for at least several months as we get to know one another and forge a working relationship. I typically work with a person for at least 3 months to a year or longer.

K
L
How is talking with a professional different from talking to a loved one?

Close friends and family members can be an incredible source of support. The value of a professional often comes from their specialized skills for treating specific problems such as posttraumatic stress or sleep issues. Professionals also don't have a personal investment in what you think, feel, and do, so you can know that their input isn't driven by the fact that your actions will have a direct impact on their life (as is often the case with loved ones).

K
L
How soon can we start?

I keep my practice small so I can give each person I work with the individual time and attention they need. Sometimes I have more-or-less immediate openings, and other times there may be a wait before we can start working together.

K
L
What forms of payment may I use?
Payment can be made by credit card for video-based sessions. In-person sessions may be paid by cash, check, or credit card.
K
L
Is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) the only approach that works?

CBT has a tremendous amount of research support showing that it's effective, and a lot of my work focuses on CBT practices. At the same time, other approaches can be very helpful, and are often just as beneficial as CBT. Our work together most likely will involve a combination of CBT and other helpful techniques.

K
L
What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel or reschedule a session, please provide me with at least 48 hours’ notice.

K

Are individual sessions completely confidential?

I consider protecting your privacy to be a sacred trust. As a rule, I don't share anything we talk about outside of our sessions. The only exceptions are when there is a clear threat to your safety or someone else's, or in other rare cases that we can talk about. Outside of these unusual instances you can rest assured that I will hold what you tell me in strict confidence.
